ABOUT THE BLOG

For me, this blog is a catalyst for my professional development as a medical student and eventually [/hopefully] a cardiologist, as I have a passion for all matters dealing with the heart.

Over the past four years, I changed more than any other period in my life, for the best and for the worst. I'm starting to get a sneak peek of what my "doctor personality" will be like, and those changes are evident in this blog.  Personally, I love going back and reading some of my first entries.

Somewhere I have stashed entries from my days as an EMT then as a full-fledged paramedic (RIP "medic" me, 2005-2009), and maybe one day I'll be able to add some stories from my greenest days.

For those of you not familiar with electrocardiography, the EKG under the title on the home page is of a "paced" rhythm, seen in patients whose implanted packemakers are providing all of the electrical impulses needed to stimulate the heart muscle to contract.

Metaphorically, I could go on forever about pacemakers, but I'll leave that to the imagination.

And lastly, in case anyone was wondering, Carly Starlight is entirely a pseudonym.

This blog has transitioned through several different versions, but the content has remained the same and all of the older posts are still available.

Older versions:

No Ifs, Ands or Buts: This title was from an incident on my psych rotation with an elderly Alzheimer's patient who, during a mini mental state exam, got only one part correct: repeating the phrase, "no ifs, ands, or buts," which he did while actually reaching for my butt. Fortunately for me, my motor neurons fire a lot more quickly than his, and I was spared from further embarrassement. This retired on 12/28/12, becoming Change of Pace.

Don't Break Even (ablateme.blogspot.com).
